Saving energy is a topical issue. Heating is one of the biggest energy consumers, so minimizing energy loss is essential. Proper window seals save on heating costs and improve living comfort.
Additionally, energy-efficient housing is ecological because the carbon footprint of housing is the largest when comparing the stages of a building's life cycle (manufacturing/construction/operational period/repairs/demolition).
The condition of window seals should be checked regularly. Fractured, detached or hardened seals should be replaced with new ones. Insufficient sealing causes drafts in the apartment.
In the Weatherproofing guide, you can get more information about sealing and choosing suitable seals, as well as comprehensive instructions for installation.
Tips on when it is the right time to check the conditions of window and door seals and possibly replace the seals
As important as renewing the seals periodically is choosing the correct seal for the windows and doors. If your previous weatherstrip has worked well, you should usually choose a similar seal to replace it.
There are various types of seals out there; e.g. groove seals, self-adhesive seals and silicone seals. O-profile (omega) groove seals are placed into grooves in your door/window. In most new windows this groove is already in the door/window.
For older doors and windows we recommend you to use self-adhesive seals or to contact a professional in case you'd like to switch to groove seals. We recommend that you don't make the grooves yourself.
Here you can read more on the different types of seals and how to install them.
